I'm just wondering if these two were true Christians or not. It seems that their books (Narnia, LOTR) can be interpreted either way.
Anyone know?

I know for a fact CS Lewis definitely was. Read his book "Mere Christianity"

as for Tolkien, I don't know

And shepherds we shall be,
For Thee, my Lord, for Thee.
Power hath descended forth from Thy hand,
That our feet may swiftly carry out Thy command.
So we shall flow a river forth to Thee
And teeming with souls shall it ever be.
In Nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritūs Sancti.
I never thought I'd make it this long, but the Lord has delivered me!

Actually, CS Lewis and Tolkien were friends.  (I read "The Narnian," Lewis's biography.)  CS Lewis doubted Christianity for a long time, but was somewhat "convinced" by JRR Tolkien that the faith was real.  Random fact!

Have faith, ye weary and ye worn
Thy burden lay ye here
The tides are rushing 'round and 'round
No waters shall ye fear.
